Just bought your first Spridget - here's two things you must check...

Sticky Steering

When you bought your Spridget did the steering creak at all? Does the wheel feel like there’s a lot of friction in the system? I’ve bought six Spridgets and three had the same, simple fault.

At some time their owners had removed the steering wheel, often to replace a bush or to fit a ghastly small wheel. When retightened the wheel the boss clamps down onto the plastic indicator switch cover jamming it. Under the steering column you’ll find a couple of big crosshead screws holding the steering column outer. Undo these and slide the outer column down until there is a couple of mm clearance between the boss and the column. Takes 5 minutes and is a ‘miracle’ cure...

Not fast enough?

Take off your airfilters. Get someone to sit in the car and press the accelerator hard down. Do the throttle butterflies open fully and lie flat to the airstream? Bet they don’t:-) Can be caused by thick carpet under the pedal, slack cable or just the linkages being loose. Easy fix...

Now go to your local bike shop and buy some decent outer brake cable – the sort with a nylon or teflon lining. Throw away the crappy outer garages use – the difference in the smoothness of the throttle is huge. While you’re at the bike shop you could also pinch one of those brake adjusters to fit on the end of the cable so that keeping the throttle cable adjusted is a 30-second job in future...
